Buried Memories is the first novel in the romantic suspense series Hearts in Peril. It is only available at the website https://www.anniesfiction.com. Each installment deals with a different couple surrounding a mystery. Buried Memories revolves around Eve Cameron and Trent Walsh. Eve and Trent were high school sweethearts until an explosion at Eve’s grandparents’ mansion left Eve’s friend dead and her injured. The traumatic event caused her father to abandon her and her mother, along with Eve and and her mother escaping to another town to get away from the bad memories. As a result, Eve breaks up with Trent.
Twelve years later, Eve returns to her hometown to help her grandmother sell her mansion. Upon her return, Eve is attacked and Trent (who is a private investigator) thinks the Roadside Stalker is responsible. But the attacks continue while Eve is staying at the mansion. Trent is staying at the mansion because Eve’s late grandfather wanted him to investigate the garage explosion, which has gone unsolved for the last tweleve years. But are the attacks on Eve due to the Roadside Stalker or are they related to the cold case Trent is investigating? While Eve and Trent work together, old romantic feelings resurface. Is there a future for them? Can they be given a second chance?
The romantic aspect of this novel was very sweet. However, there was an issue with the mystery aspect of this novel. There was essentially two mystries. The first one was developed gradually throughout the novel (and it was decent mystery). However, the second one was not developed for most of the novel and suddenly resolved in the last chapter. This second mystery should have been developed more throughout the novel and not rushed.
Regardless, it was a decent novel and I will continue reading the series. Hopefully, the second installment will have a better developed mystery.
Rating: 4/5
