Kara Foxworth is returning to her hometown, Castlebridge, for the Christmas holiday. Upon arriving there, the remains of her aunt and her car are found off the road. Kara’s aunt had been missing for ten years; many people in the town speculated that she left town with a man. It is particularly eerie for Kara that her aunt was found on the same road her father was killed.
At the crime scene is police officer Sean Colton, Kara’s high school boyfriend. Kara is skeptical that her aunt was killed in an accident; Sean starts to feel that way too. Despite the fact that Kara does not trust Sean, she slowly starts to rely on him. And as a result, they start to have feelings for one another again. But Kara is constantly being targeted, and her life is in danger. Can Sean figure out who is behind this before he loses a second chance to rekindle his relationship with Kara?
I had a difficult time getting into this novel. The overall mystery involved a conspiracy with many high-level people in the town. I thought this plot line was incredibly unrealistic. Then there was Kara and Sean’s relationship. For them to be hung up on the events of high school also seemed to be unrealistic. People are immature in high school and can do stupid things. People mature and they grow; they should be able to move on from anything that happened in high school, not continue to obsess about it.
