State: Wisconsin
After Rachel Miller witnesses a murder outside of her cafe, she becomes the victim of multiple kidnapping attempts. Rachel is an independent Amish woman who wants to be able to protect herself and is not sure she wants to marry. Much to her reluctance, she accepts the hlep of her neighbor, Jacob Strauss. She stays at his place during this ordeal.
Jacob is a widower who sometimes comes off as grumpy. He still feels guilty about his wife and son’s deaths; he blames himself for what happened to them. He has been living alone and keeps to himself. Helping to protect Rachel, however, causes him to open up and let someone into his life. His grumpiness slowly goes away and he begins to find some closure to his wife and son’s deaths.
Throughout the danger that Rachel is in and trying to figure out why she is being targeted, they fall in love with one another. Both Rachel and Jacob become more open to marriage and not living so independently. In order for them to move forward, though, they have to figure out why Rachel is being targeted? Does this have to do with her father who left her and her mom when she was little?
The only way to find out is to trust local law enforcement. The Amish typically do not like to interact with law enforcement and keep to themselves. But it was good for Rachel and Jacob to trust them (despite the difficulty) because they were overwhelmed and in unfamilar territory. I like Amish stories where the Amish characters learn to work with the non-Amish people in their community. Yes, they live differently, but that does not mean they cannot work together.
I highly recommend this novel.
