Recently, Kitty Underhay has discovered relatives she never knew existed. In book one of this series, she reconnects with her father after many years being separated from him. She learns that he has a sister who is married and has a daughter, Lucy, who is around Kitty’s age. They live in an estate called Enderley Hall. Kitty receives an invitation from them to be their guest for one week. Kitty is excited to connect with family, but when she arrives, her visit is tarnished by a series of murders.
Kitty calls her friend Matthew Bryant, veteran of World War I and current private investigator. He, along with the local detective, investigates the murders. Matters become so dangerous that Matt wants Kitty to leave the estate. This creates much tension between Matt and Kitty that carries out through the entire novel. It is obvious that they are both developing romantic feelings for one another, but both seem afraid to admit their feelings. Matt lost his wife and baby in the war and seems reluctant and scared to let anyone in.
This tension between Matt and Kitty reaches a boiling point where Kitty is put in a very dangerous situation to catch the murderer. I will not give up the ending, but it creates a kind of cliffhanger for both Matt and Kitty’s relationship. Normally, I am not a fan of cliffhangers, but I think it works for the series, which has seventeen installments for far.
I enjoyed the mystery very much and after reading two installments so far, I feel that this series has a lot of promise.
