It all started when Nancy saw a little girl almost get run over by a moving van. The girl jumps into a body of water and Nancy stops her blue convertible. She runs to pick up the girl from the river and carries her back to her house. There, she meets the girl’s (Judy) great-aunts who are struggling financially. While they are taking care of Judy, Nancy finds out that the great-aunts were expecting money from the death of a relative, Josiah Crowley. However, Josiah Crowley supposedly changes his will to give it to the Tophams’ family who he was living with before he died. Nancy finds that odd since the Topham family is relatively well off. She went to high school with the two daughters who Nancy finds to be mean spirited and arrogant. After talking to her father, who is a lawyer, she wonders if Crowley came up with another will. Her sleuthing leads her to searching for an antique clock at a camp site that might lead to an alternative will.
It has been a long time since I revisited the Nancy Drew series. The Nancy Drew series is unique in that many different authors contributed to the series under the pen name “Carolyn Keene.” The series starts out in 1959. The classic series ends at book 56 in 1978. However, Book 57 (there are more than 150) was published in 2015 (I think this was just the Kindle version. I think it was actually published in the 90s). Nancy is still eighteen years old, but the stories are more modern. Regardless, these are wholesome novels and frankly, our youth needs more wholesome entertainment. As a whole, The Secret of the Old Clock was an engaging mystery for young people with a very smart and resourceful sleuth. I look forward to reviewing the whole series.
